The Rekifune River, which originates in the Hidaka Mountains, has been recognized as “the clearest river in Japan" 16 times since 1987 by the water quality survey.
In 1996, it was selected as one of the 100 best rivers in the country.
The river is also called the Hikata River, and is sometimes referred to as the "River of Treasure" due to the fact that gold dust has been dug in this area.
With an extension of 64.7 km, the river gathers tributaries such as the Naka River and the Nubinai River in its middle reaches, and flows into the Pacific Ocean. It is rare that this size of river is flowing through only one town even in Hokkaido
A large park on the riverbed is a great place to spend time and relax. In the fall, salmon running up the river can be seen.
